The cucumber is actually a climbing plant, but it also grows in a prostrate position and is cultivated in Europe as well as in America, Africa and Asia. It bears the botanical name Cucumis sativus. Cucumber plants belong to the cucurbit family, and their fruits can be divided into two groups of varieties: the salad cucumbers or snake cucumbers, and the spicy or pickling cucumbers.
